CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Kurumi Ebisuzawa
Age: Not stated in the canon; around 17 or 18
Canon: Gakkou Gurashi!
Canon Point: After Chapter 21 in the manga
Character Information: Here and Here.
Personality:
In the Campus Life Club, there currently are four members: Yuki, Yuuri, Miki, and Kurumi. Each member fulfills a different role. Yuki keeps the Club together with her cheerfulness. Yuuri is the president and takes it upon herself to govern the Club the best she can. Miki, as the youngest and newest member, brings a new perspective to situations. As for Kurumi? She's the one who protects the group from both outside threats and themselves.
Shown often with a smirk and her trusty shovel, Kurumi seems to ooze confidence. Be it dealing with zombies that wander too close to their barricade or putting up with Yuki's jokes at her expense, Kurumi might be seen as the type who can handle anything life deals her. Her temper can run short but in normal circumstances it's usually only followed with a smart remark or maybe a swipe of her shovel. For example, when Yuki is slacking off while the group in the garden Kurumi swipes her shovel at her with a loud shout of 'no slacking'. Though, the swipe misses and Kurumi is grinning. When Yuki complains about the attack Kurumi just responds that she used the flat of the blade so even if it hit there'd be no damage.
Aside from the fact that she does have a temper, Kurumi does try her best to keep the group together. An example of this is from chapter fourteen, after the 'sports festival' was finished. Miki, who just recently was rescued, starting talking to Kurumi and Yuuri about the fact that if they did nothing to cure Yuki then her delusions wouldn't go away. Kurumi just says that it's not bad for Yuki to be like this. Yuuri, on the other hand, accused Miki of not understanding her yet. This sparked Miki to yell at her for being mutually dependent. The accusation riled the normally calm Yuuri into action. Kurumi physically put herself between them to stop the argument from becoming a full blown fight.
Another example of her protecting the club members is in chapter twenty eight. Kurumi and Miki were investigating outside the school in the parking lot when they became surrounded by zombies. Miki was injured severely. Kurumi threw her in an unoccupied car and then ran to another car. She struck the car with her shovel a few times to make a racket. Kurumi was afraid but protecting Miki was important.
The role of being the person the entire group can depend on is really exemplified after Kurumi was bitten by the zombified Megumi in chapter eighteen. The entire group was thrown off-kilter. Yuuri nearly fainted after managing to get Kurumi to a safe place. Miki was driven to save her by going to the same area Kurumi got bitten so she could try to find medicine. Yuki spent every moment she could with Kurumi even after Yuuri had told her not to get close; she even untied Kurumi after both Miki and Yuuri went to sleep so her friend wouldn't be bound. (Luckily for everyone Kurumi didn't turn into a zombie after that.)
Now, the question is, how and why did Kurumi get bitten? That's quite telling of who Kurumi is. For all her dependability, Kurumi is a girl under a lot of pressure and she's loyal to those closest to her. When Miki finds an emergency response manual in Megumi's belongings. This manual had a map of the school--including an emergency bunker. This find threw Kurumi into a rage and she attacked Miki not once but twice over a short period over it. First, she grabbed a hold of Miki by the collar after initially finding out and then after Miki gave a suggestion why the teacher didn't tell them? Kurumi shoved her violently against a wall with the words, "Don't talk as if you know everything!"
This outburst truly frightened Miki, as this was the first time she had ever seen Kurumi truly lose her temper. Yuuri broke it up but she didn't seem as surprised as Miki. Possibly because Yuuri and Kurumi have argued fiercely in the past. (This was confessed by Yuki that she sometimes notices them fighting late at night when they think she's asleep.) Kurumi decided to go off to look for the shelter but not before apologizing to Miki for letting her temper get the best of her. Why did Kurumi get so angry? She felt betrayed by Megumi, the person that helped form the club and who the original three members of the club had a connection to. Kurumi also seemed to take her frustrations out on the zombies that were blocking her way to the shelter.
When Kurumi found Megumi's zombie in the shelter she froze. Before (and after this event), Kurumi only paused once before killing a zombie. Kurumi hesitated in both instances for the same reason: she cared deeply for the zombie before her. The first time it had been her the guy she had joined the track team to get close to. That was the day of the outbreak and if it weren't for the fact that Yuuri (Megumi in the anime version) had called to her, Kurumi would have been killed that day. Unfortunately, when she fought Megumi's zombie she froze again but was alone. She was bitten deeply in her arm.
After she had gotten back to the group, all Kurumi could say was that she messed up.
A few more notes. After she was bitten, Kurumi's personality didn't really change all that much except for a few points. When Kurumi goes alone if one of the other members decides to go with her she lets them instead of insisting that she'd be fine. She learned from her mistake of going out alone even if the others would let her still if she insisted. Another thing is that she still insists on keeping the morale of the group up. In chapter thirty seven she even says that morale and food are the two most important things the group needs to survive.
One last thing is that while Kurumi is mostly open about how she feels, she tries to keep her insecurities and sadness away from the group. Especially Yuki. Since morale is important to Kurumi she tries to keep such thoughts private. Some moments of this is the fact that on the trip out to the mall (that eventually led the group to Miki), they stopped by Kurumi's home. She saw that her parents room was clearly savaged with blood everywhere. Kurumi found her room clean and sobbed while holding a pillow for a while before returning to the group with a smile. It wasn't that she wasn't sad but she didn't want that to effect anyone else. Another point is that she has nightmares about having to kill the person she likes yet she hasn't talked about it with anyone else.
In all, Kurumi is someone who wants to be able to be depended on and is very loyal to her friends. She might take more risks than she should at times or might give a sharp comment to someone she likes but at her core, she'd risk everything for the people she holds dear. Which is why coming to Ryslig would test Kurumi severely. Kurumi has no desire to hurt (living) people but if it's for survival... Well. She'd be conflicted to say the least.
